How to Set Up a Mobile Hotspot on Android
Android phones make it easy to share your mobile data connection with other devices. The exact menu names vary slightly between manufacturers, but the process is straightforward on every Android phone.
How to Turn On Mobile Hotspot
Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections.
- Tap Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
- Tap Mobile Hotspot and toggle it on.
Google Pixel
- Open Settings.
- Tap Network & Internet.
- Tap Hotspot & Tethering.
- Tap WiFi Hotspot and toggle it on.
Other Android Phones
On most Android devices, navigate to Settings > Network > Hotspot & Tethering (or similar). You can also search for "hotspot" in the Settings search bar to find it quickly.
Configuring Your Hotspot
Before sharing your connection, configure these settings for the best experience:
| Setting | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Network name (SSID) | Choose something recognisable but avoid including personal information. |
| Password | Set a strong password of at least 8 characters. Share it only with people you trust. |
| Security type | Use WPA3 if available, or WPA2. Never use Open (no security). |
| Band | 2.4 GHz for wider range and better wall penetration. 5 GHz for faster speeds at shorter range. |
USB Tethering
- Connect your Android phone to your computer using a USB cable.
- On your phone, go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering (Samsung) or Settings > Network & Internet > Hotspot & Tethering (Pixel).
- Toggle on USB Tethering.
- Your computer will detect the connection and use your phone's data automatically.
USB tethering provides the fastest and most stable connection. It also charges your phone while in use, making it ideal for extended work sessions.
Bluetooth Tethering
Pair your phone with the other device via Bluetooth, then enable Bluetooth Tethering in the same Hotspot & Tethering menu. This method uses less battery than WiFi hotspot but is significantly slower and is rarely the best option.
Auto Turn-Off
Most Android phones will automatically turn off the hotspot after a period of inactivity (typically 10 minutes with no connected devices). This saves battery and data. You can usually adjust or disable this timeout in the hotspot settings.
Managing Data Usage
Tethering to a laptop consumes data much faster than phone browsing. To keep data usage under control:
- Enable Data Saver on your Android phone (Settings > Network > Data Saver) to restrict background data usage for connected devices.
- Set a data warning and limit: go to Settings > Network > Data Usage and set a threshold so you are alerted before exceeding your allowance.
- Disable automatic updates on your laptop while tethered — Windows and macOS updates can be several gigabytes.
- Avoid streaming in HD — switch to standard definition on video platforms to reduce data consumption.
Business Use: Hotspot Best Practices
If you rely on hotspot for business connectivity, follow these recommendations:
- Set a strong, unique password and change it regularly. Do not use default passwords.
- Monitor data usage across team devices to avoid overage charges.
- Consider a dedicated mobile broadband plan if you tether regularly — these often include higher data allowances and better speeds than standard phone plans.
- Use a dedicated 4G/5G router for teams rather than relying on one person's phone.
- Ensure VPN is active when accessing company resources over a hotspot connection for added security.
Troubleshooting
- Hotspot not working: restart your phone, check your APN settings and confirm tethering is included in your plan.
- Slow speeds: try switching between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Reduce the number of connected devices.
- Devices cannot find the hotspot: ensure the hotspot is toggled on and the SSID is set to visible (not hidden).
- Connection drops: keep the phone plugged into power and avoid moving it far from the connected devices.
