How to Set Up a Mobile Hotspot on iPhone

Every iPhone can share its mobile data connection with other devices using the built-in Personal Hotspot feature. Whether you need to get your laptop online or share your connection with a friend, setting it up takes less than a minute.

How to Turn On Personal Hotspot

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Personal Hotspot (or Mobile Data > Personal Hotspot on some versions).
  3. Toggle on Allow Others to Join.
  4. Note the WiFi password displayed on screen — other devices will need this to connect.

Your iPhone is now broadcasting a WiFi network. Other devices will see your iPhone's name in their WiFi settings. Select it and enter the password to connect.

Connecting Other Devices

Via WiFi (Most Common)

On the device you want to connect (laptop, tablet, another phone), open WiFi settings, find your iPhone's name in the list and enter the hotspot password. You will see a blue bar or indicator on your iPhone confirming a device is connected.

Via USB

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer using a Lightning or USB-C cable.
  2. If prompted on the iPhone, tap Trust to authorise the connection.
  3. Your computer should connect to the internet automatically through the iPhone. On a Mac, check System Settings > Network. On Windows, the connection appears in Network settings.

USB tethering is faster than WiFi and charges your iPhone at the same time — ideal for longer sessions.

Via Bluetooth

Pair your iPhone with the other device via Bluetooth settings, then connect to the hotspot through the Bluetooth device menu. This method uses less power but offers slower speeds and is rarely needed.

Instant Hotspot (Apple Ecosystem)

If you own multiple Apple devices signed into the same Apple ID, you can use Instant Hotspot:

  • Your Mac or iPad will automatically detect your iPhone's hotspot in the WiFi menu — no password required.
  • Simply select your iPhone's name and the connection is established.
  • The hotspot turns off automatically when you disconnect, saving battery.

Family Sharing

With Family Sharing enabled, family members signed into your iCloud family group can also connect to your Personal Hotspot without entering a password. You can manage this in Settings > Family > Personal Hotspot.

Battery and Performance Tips

  • Plug in your iPhone when using the hotspot for extended periods — it drains the battery significantly.
  • Reduce connected devices: the more devices connected, the slower the speed and the faster the battery drains.
  • Use USB tethering when possible for the best speed and to keep the phone charging.
  • Turn off the hotspot when you no longer need it to save battery.

Troubleshooting: Personal Hotspot Missing or Not Working

If you cannot see the Personal Hotspot option in Settings, or it is not working correctly:

  • Check your APN settings. Incorrect APN configuration can disable the hotspot. See our iPhone APN settings guide for instructions.
  • Restart your iPhone. A simple restart often resolves hotspot issues.
  • Check with your network. Some plans restrict hotspot functionality. Contact your provider to confirm tethering is included in your plan.
  • Update iOS. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates.
  • Reset network settings. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: this will erase saved WiFi passwords.

How Much Data Does Hotspot Use?

Hotspot data comes from your mobile data allowance. A laptop connected via hotspot uses considerably more data than phone browsing. Video calls alone use 1–2 GB per hour. Monitor your data usage in Settings > Mobile Data to avoid unexpected charges.
