How to Change APN Settings on iPhone

How to Change APN Settings on iPhone

Changing APN settings on an iPhone works differently from Android. Apple restricts APN access on some carrier-locked devices, so the steps depend on your network provider and whether your iPhone is unlocked. This guide explains how to update your APN settings on iPhone and what to do if the option isn't available.

Step-by-Step: Change APN on iPhone

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Mobile Data (labelled Cellular on some iPhones).
  3. Tap Mobile Data Network (or Cellular Data Network).
  4. Under the Mobile Data section, enter your network's APN details:
    • APN — The access point name (e.g., everywhere for EE)
    • Username — If required by your network
    • Password — If required by your network
  5. Scroll down to the MMS section and enter:
    • MMSC — Your network's MMS centre URL
    • MMS Proxy — The proxy address and port (e.g., 149.254.201.135:8080)
  6. Tap the back arrow to return — iPhone saves APN settings automatically.
  7. Toggle Airplane Mode on, wait 10 seconds, then toggle it off. Alternatively, restart your iPhone.

Can't See Mobile Data Network?

If the Mobile Data Network option is missing from your settings, your carrier manages APN settings automatically through a carrier profile. This is common on iPhones purchased directly from networks like EE, Vodafone, O2, and Three.

To update your carrier profile:

  1. Go to Settings > General > About.
  2. Wait a few seconds. If a carrier settings update is available, a pop-up will appear.
  3. Tap Update to install the latest carrier settings.
  4. Restart your iPhone.

If no update appears and your data still isn't working, you may need to contact your network provider to request a carrier profile or configuration profile be sent to your device.

Installing a Carrier Configuration Profile

Some networks and MVNOs provide a downloadable configuration profile that automatically sets up APN, MMS, and other settings. To install one:

  1. Open Safari on your iPhone (not Chrome or another browser).
  2. Visit your network provider's APN setup page.
  3. Download the configuration profile when prompted.
  4. Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
  5. Tap the downloaded profile and select Install.
  6. Restart your iPhone.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Data still not working? Reset network settings at Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This clears saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings.
  • Check your SIM — Remove and reinsert your SIM card, or try it in another phone.
  • eSIM users — APN settings for eSIM are managed in the same location. Select the correct line under Mobile Data if you have dual SIM.
