Business energy FAQs

Quick answers to the questions UK business owners ask us most often about gas, electricity and switching supplier.

How much can a UK business save by switching energy supplier?
Most UK SMEs that have not switched in the last 12 months save between 15% and 35% on their unit rate when they move off a deemed or out-of-contract tariff onto a fixed business energy contract. Larger users on half-hourly meters can save more by going to a flexible or pass-through tariff.
When should I start comparing my next business energy contract?
Start the comparison process 6 months before your current contract ends. Most business energy suppliers will let you sign a new contract up to 12 months in advance, locking in today’s wholesale prices. Wait too long and you risk rolling onto an expensive deemed-rate tariff.
What is the cheapest business energy supplier in the UK?
There’s no single cheapest supplier — the cheapest tariff for your business depends on your annual consumption (kWh), your meter type, your postcode and how long you fix for. Our comparison engine quotes every UK supplier in 60 seconds so you can see the lowest unit rate for your exact usage.
Do I have to pay VAT on my business energy bill?
Yes — business energy is charged at 20% VAT by default. You may qualify for the reduced 5% rate if you use less than 33 kWh of electricity or 145 kWh of gas per day, or if at least 60% of your usage is for non-business purposes (e.g. charities, residential care).
