Aruba Instant On AP22 — settings, status lights and reset

The Aruba Instant On AP22 is a wireless access point from Aruba (HPE). This page covers the four things people actually come looking for: its settings address, how its login works, what its lights mean and how to reset it safely.
What is the Aruba Instant On AP22 gateway address?
There is no address to type in, and that is by design rather than an omission on our part. The AP22 takes its address from your DHCP server — HPE lists automatic assignment as the default — so there is no fixed number to reach it on, and no equivalent of a router's 192.168.1.1. Management happens in the Instant On app or the browser portal instead. There is one exception worth knowing, and only one: while the unit is still at factory defaults it broadcasts an open network named InstantOn followed by the last three pairs of its MAC address, and joining that lets you reach a local page at connect.instant-on.hpe.com to pre-set a static address, a VLAN or PPPoE details before the unit is onboarded. Once it is connected to the cloud, that page closes off. On older firmware the same page answers at connect.arubainstanton.com.
What is the default username and password for the Aruba Instant On AP22?
App-managed, no web login
The Aruba Instant On AP22 has no router password at all, because it has no web login to put one on.
How you get in instead. Through the HPE Networking Instant On app on iOS, Android and Web browser.
Unusually for cloud-managed kit, there is a full browser alternative to the phone app at the Instant On portal, so you are not forced onto a mobile device to administer a site. HPE lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari as supported.
There is no factory default username or password on this access point, and after reading the AP22 installation guide and both current Instant On user guides we can say that as a positive finding rather than a gap. The only credentials involved are the Instant On account you create yourself, with an email address and a password you choose, verified by email. The same account signs you into the app, the web portal and HPE's support site. So if you have inherited one of these and are looking for the password, there is not one to find — what you need is either the account that owns it or a unit that has been released from that account.
Because access follows the account that set the network up rather than a password, the question to answer when you are locked out is which account owns it.
What do the lights on the Aruba Instant On AP22 mean?
Here is what each light on the Aruba Instant On AP22 is telling you, and what to do about it.

The AP22 has only two lights, a System light and a Radio light, which makes it easy to read once you know that most of the information is in the System light's colour. We have merged two HPE sources here, because neither is complete on its own: the installation guide has the six core System states, while the Instant On user guides add the onboarding behaviours and — more usefully — the rapidly blinking amber that means the unit is not getting enough power. The two documents word the same states slightly differently, and where they overlap we have followed the installation guide as the model-specific one.
How do you reset a Aruba Instant On AP22?
What you lose. The access point returns to factory defaults and comes back broadcasting its open setup network, ready to be onboarded again. What it does not necessarily do is release the unit from the previous owner's cloud site — see below, because that distinction is the whole second-hand question.
- The reset button is on the bottom of the unit and needs something narrow — HPE suggests a paperclip. There are two documented methods, and which you use depends on whether the access point is currently working. During normal operation, press and hold the button. If the unit will not boot far enough for that to work, hold the button down before it has power, connect the power or PoE while still holding, and release after fifteen seconds.
- Hold it for more than 10 seconds during normal operation, or 15 seconds when held from power-up.
- Release, and give the unit a few minutes to restart before trying to connect.
HPE documents both durations precisely in the AP22 installation guide, which is refreshingly specific compared with most vendors. What it does not document is any light pattern that confirms the reset has taken, so the thing to watch for is the unit coming back up and eventually alternating green and amber, which is its ready-to-onboard state.
A reboot is not a reset. A power cycle changes nothing about the configuration. Because an Instant On access point holds its settings in the cloud rather than on the unit, restarting one is close to consequence-free and is a reasonable first move.
What if you cannot get into the Aruba Instant On AP22 at all?
There is no device password that can be lost, so recovery is ordinary account recovery: reset the password on the Instant On account by email and your sites come back with it. The difficult case is not a forgotten password at all — it is an access point still registered to somebody else's account, which no amount of password recovery will solve.
If that does not work, a factory reset will always get you in, at the cost of every setting on the unit.
