Openreach ONT (fibre modem) — settings, status lights and reset

The ONT has no gateway address and no settings page.

There is no login on this unit.

The Openreach ONT (fibre modem) is a fibre termination unit from Openreach, in UK use 2010-present. This page covers the four things people actually come looking for: its settings address, how its login works, what its lights mean and how to reset it safely.

What is the Openreach ONT (fibre modem) gateway address?

The ONT has no gateway address and no settings page. Your router is the device with the gateway address, and it plugs into the ONT's LAN or Port 1 socket. If you are looking for a login page, you want your router, not this box.

What is the default username and password for the Openreach ONT (fibre modem)?

No local admin login

There is nothing to log in to on the Openreach ONT (fibre modem).

There is no customer login on an Openreach ONT. It is provider-managed hardware with no admin interface, so there is nothing to sign in to and no password to lose. Everything you can diagnose on it is read from the status lights. Configuration such as your broadband username and password belongs on the router connected to it.

What do the lights on the Openreach ONT (fibre modem) mean?

Here is what each light on the Openreach ONT (fibre modem) is telling you, and what to do about it.

LightWhat it meansWhat to do
POWERsolid greenThe ONT has power and is on.Check the PON and LOS lights next.
POWERoff offThe ONT has no power.Check the power cable at both the unit and the mains socket, and that the socket is switched on. If it stays off, report it to your provider.
PONsolid greenThe fibre link to the exchange is working and the exchange recognises your ONT. This is the normal state.Nothing to do. If you still have no internet, the problem is between the ONT and your router, or in the router itself.
PONflashing greenThe ONT is talking to the exchange to verify itself. Normal during start-up.Wait until it turns solid green. Allow up to five minutes.
LOSsolid redLoss of Service. The ONT cannot see a signal from the exchange, which usually means a fault on the fibre path.Check the thin white fibre cable is fully inserted and undamaged, then power-cycle the ONT and wait five minutes. If LOS stays red, report a fault to your provider: this is a network-side problem you cannot fix yourself.
PON and LOSflashing redThe fibre link is not connected, or there is a problem between your property and the exchange.Check the fibre cable is inserted and undamaged, power the ONT off and back on, and wait five minutes. If it persists, report a fault.
LAN / Port 1flashing greenData is moving between the ONT and your router. This is the normal working state.Nothing to do.
LAN / Port 1off offThe ONT cannot see your router.Check the Ethernet cable between the ONT's Port 1 socket and your router's WAN or broadband port. Try a different cable. Then check your router is powered on.
TEL 1-2solid greenA fibre phone line is live on that port.Nothing to do.
TEL 1-2flashing greenThe fibre phone line is not yet activated.Wait for activation to complete, or check with your provider if it has been more than a day.

There are several Openreach ONT variants and the number of lights and their labels differ between them. The meanings above hold across the range.

How do you reset a Openreach ONT (fibre modem)?

What you lose. Nothing is stored that you can lose, because there is no customer configuration on the unit.

  1. There is no customer factory reset. If the lights show a fault, power-cycle the unit by disconnecting its power cable.
  2. Release, and give the unit a few minutes to restart before trying to connect.

Never unplug the thin fibre cable. It is not a user-serviceable connection and the connector damages easily.

A reboot is not a reset. Disconnect the ONT's power cable for at least one minute, then reconnect it and allow up to five minutes for the PON light to return to solid green.

What if you cannot get into the Openreach ONT (fibre modem) at all?

Nothing to recover: there is no stored customer configuration and no password.

If that does not work, a factory reset will always get you in, at the cost of every setting on the unit.
