BT Business Smart Hub 2 — login, gateway address and status lights

Open a browser on a device connected to your BT Business Smart Hub 2 and go to 192.168.1.254.

The password is unique to your unit and printed on it — there is no universal default.

The BT Business Smart Hub 2 is a broadband hub supplied by an internet provider from BT, in UK use 2021-present; Hub 3 now above it. This page covers the four things people actually come looking for: its settings address, how its login works, what its lights mean and how to reset it safely.

What is the BT Business Smart Hub 2 gateway address?

The BT Business Smart Hub 2 settings page is at 192.168.1.254. Type that into the address bar of a browser — not into a search box, which will just search for the number instead of opening the page.

Your device has to be connected to the BT Business Smart Hub 2 itself for this to work — over its Wi-Fi or by cable. On mobile data, or connected to a different network, the address goes nowhere.

Documented on business.bt.com for this hub, and BT notes the address itself is changeable from the Hub Manager. No hostname is published for the business hub, unlike the consumer hubs.

What is the default username and password for the BT Business Smart Hub 2?

Unique password on the device label

There is no default password for the BT Business Smart Hub 2 that we could publish, because every unit has a different one.

Where to find yours. On the back of the hub, where BT labels it the Admin Password for Hub Manager.

BT is unusually direct about this: the admin password is on the back of the hub, and it is not the same as the wireless password. Both are specific to your unit, so there is no shared default. The hub also carries a QR code on the back that fills in the network and admin passwords for you, though you can type them by hand instead. No admin username is documented — the sign-in is password-only.

If a website offers you a single password that works on every BT Business Smart Hub 2, it is wrong. Those lists copy a per-device password from one unit and republish it as though it were universal.

What do the lights on the BT Business Smart Hub 2 mean?

Here is what each light on the BT Business Smart Hub 2 is telling you, and what to do about it.

LightWhat it meansWhat to do
Statussolid greenThe hub is starting up.BT says it takes roughly 60 seconds to fully power on before it tries to connect.
Statusflashing orangeThe hub is connecting to broadband.Give it at least three minutes. The light turns blue when it is ready.

If you did, this is the expected light.
Statussolid blueThe hub is working and connected to the internet. If you cannot get online, try switching your device off and on.
Statussolid redThere is a problem somewhere.Turn the hub off and on. If the light still does not turn blue, use a paperclip on the factory reset button.

WPSflashing redThe WPS attempt did not connect.Wait a couple of minutes and try again.

Taken from BT's business documentation for this hub. One row is genuinely different from the consumer Smart Hub 2 table: the solid orange state on the business hub includes bridge mode, which BT's consumer table does not mention at all.

How do you reset a BT Business Smart Hub 2?

What you lose. Restores every setting and all configuration to factory defaults, including any static IP configuration and port forwarding rules you have set up.

  1. From the Hub Manager: Advanced settings, then System, then Reset, then "Factory reset my Business Smart Hub". There is also a hardware reset button on the back that needs a paperclip.
  2. Hold it for Not published by BT for this model.
  3. Release, and give the unit a few minutes to restart before trying to connect.

BT documents the software route fully but never states a hold time for the hardware button on this hub. There is a hold time on the same BT page, but it belongs to the Business Hub 5 under its own heading, so we have not carried it across.

A reboot is not a reset. BT says the hub takes about four minutes to synchronise when first plugged in, and around 60 seconds to finish powering on before it attempts to connect. Give it that long before treating a non-blue light as a fault.

What if you cannot get into the BT Business Smart Hub 2 at all?

We have not confirmed whether this model offers a password recovery route short of a factory reset.
