BT Smart Hub 2 — login, gateway address and status lights
Open a browser on a device connected to your BT Smart Hub 2 and go to 192.168.1.254, or bthomehub.home.
The password is unique to your unit and printed on it — there is no universal default.
The BT Smart Hub 2 is a broadband hub supplied by an internet provider from BT, in UK use 2019-present. This page covers the four things people actually come looking for: its settings address, how its login works, what its lights mean and how to reset it safely.
What is the BT Smart Hub 2 gateway address?
The BT Smart Hub 2 settings page is at 192.168.1.254. Type that into the address bar of a browser — not into a search box, which will just search for the number instead of opening the page.
You can also use bthomehub.home, which reaches the same page and is easier to remember.
Your device has to be connected to the BT Smart Hub 2 itself for this to work — over its Wi-Fi or by cable. On mobile data, or connected to a different network, the address goes nowhere.
What is the default username and password for the BT Smart Hub 2?
Unique password on the device label
There is no default password for the BT Smart Hub 2 that we could publish, because every unit has a different one.
Where to find yours. On the Hub settings card in the pull-out tray on the back of the hub. If the card is missing, the same details are printed on a label behind the sliding tray.
Every BT hub has its own admin password, so there is no shared default to publish. The card also carries a QR code you can scan to read the Wi-Fi details when the print is worn.
If a website offers you a single password that works on every BT Smart Hub 2, it is wrong. Those lists copy a per-device password from one unit and republish it as though it were universal.
What do the lights on the BT Smart Hub 2 mean?
Here is what each light on the BT Smart Hub 2 is telling you, and what to do about it.
| Light | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Statussolid blue | The hub is on and your broadband is connected and working. | Nothing to do. |
| Statusflashing blue | The hub is starting up, or is applying an update. | Give it at least three minutes from a cold start before treating this as a fault. |
BT's self-install guide confirms that a blue light means the hub is ready. The full colour-by-colour table for this hub is not yet verified against BT's own documentation, so only the confirmed states are listed.
How do you reset a BT Smart Hub 2?
What you lose. Returns the hub to factory settings. Any Wi-Fi name or password you set yourself is replaced by the printed defaults, and every connected device must be reconnected.
- Press and hold the recessed reset button on the back of the hub with a pin or paperclip.
- Hold it for 5 to 10 seconds.
- Release, and give the unit a few minutes to restart before trying to connect.
BT documents the reset button and the password-override route but does not publish an exact hold time; 5 to 10 seconds is the widely reported figure. Treat as indicative.
A reboot is not a reset. A reboot is just a power cycle: unplug the hub, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in and allow at least three minutes for the light to settle. It keeps every setting, unlike a factory reset.
What if you cannot get into the BT Smart Hub 2 at all?
If you changed the admin password and forgot it, Hub Manager offers a password override using the hub's Wi-Fi key, so a full factory reset is usually avoidable.
If that does not work, a factory reset will always get you in, at the cost of every setting on the unit.
