Vigor 2866 — login, gateway address and status lights

Open a browser on a device connected to your Vigor 2866 and go to 192.168.1.1.

The documented default login is admin with the password admin.

Before you reset anything: a lost admin password on this model cannot be recovered. A factory reset is the only way back in and it erases the entire configuration.

The Vigor 2866 is a combined modem and router from DrayTek, in UK use 2021-present. This page covers the four things people actually come looking for: its settings address, how its login works, what its lights mean and how to reset it safely.

What is the Vigor 2866 gateway address?

The Vigor 2866 settings page is at 192.168.1.1. Type that into the address bar of a browser — not into a search box, which will just search for the number instead of opening the page.

Your device has to be connected to the Vigor 2866 itself for this to work — over its Wi-Fi or by cable. On mobile data, or connected to a different network, the address goes nowhere.

DrayTek's documented default LAN address across the Vigor range.

What is the default username and password for the Vigor 2866?

Documented fixed default

The manufacturer publishes a single default login for the Vigor 2866, so we can show it:

Username
admin
Password
admin

Published by DrayTek in its own default-credential table. If the unit came from an internet provider, check for a sticker with provider-set credentials first.

This only works if nobody has changed it. On a unit that has been in service for a while, someone should have, and if they did then no published default will help you.

What do the lights on the Vigor 2866 mean?

Here is what each light on the Vigor 2866 is telling you, and what to do about it.

LightWhat it meansWhat to do
ACTflashing greenThe router is running normally. The ACT light blinks about once per second in normal operation.Nothing to do.
ACTrapidly flashing greenYou are holding the factory reset button down and the reset has been triggered. If you did not mean to reset the router, this is your warning. If you did, release the button — the reset is under way.
ACToff offThe router is not running. Either it has no power, or it has failed to boot.Check the power supply and that the unit is switched on. If it has power but the ACT light never starts blinking, the firmware may need recovering.

These meanings are documented for a closely related model in the same range. Shares the ACT light behaviour documented across the Vigor range.

Inherited. Only the ACT states DrayTek documents are carried across.

How do you reset a Vigor 2866?

What you lose. Erases the entire configuration and returns the unit to 192.168.1.1 with the admin and admin login.

  1. Press the button inside the small RESET hole with a paperclip and hold it while watching the ACT light.
  2. Hold it for 5 or more seconds, until the ACT light flashes very rapidly.
  3. Release, and give the unit a few minutes to restart before trying to connect.

A documented 5-second hold — not the 30-30-30 routine that circulates online.

A reboot is not a reset. A power cycle or a restart from the web interface keeps every setting. Only RESET clears them.

What if you cannot get into the Vigor 2866 at all?

A lost password cannot be recovered on this model. There is no backdoor, no master password and no way for the manufacturer to retrieve it.

DrayTek cannot recover or reset your admin password. If it has been changed and is unknown, a factory reset and full rebuild is the only route, unless the unit is enrolled in VigorACS.

That leaves two options, in this order: find whoever set the unit up and ask them, or factory reset it and rebuild the configuration from scratch. Restoring a configuration backup does not help, because the backup contains the same password you do not know.
