How to Check Your Data Usage on Any Network

Keeping track of your mobile data usage helps you avoid unexpected charges and choose the right plan. You can check your data usage through your network's app or directly on your phone. This guide covers both methods for all major UK networks and phone types.

Check via Your Network App

The most accurate way to check your data usage is through your network's official app. These show your usage against your monthly allowance and update in near real-time.

Check on Your iPhone

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Mobile Data (or Cellular Data)
  3. Scroll down to see Current Period total usage
  4. Below that, you will see a per-app breakdown showing which apps use the most data

Important: iPhone does not automatically reset this counter each month. You need to scroll to the bottom and tap Reset Statistics manually at the start of each billing period for accurate monthly tracking.

Check on Your Android Phone

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Network & Internet then Mobile Network then Data Usage
  3. On Samsung devices: Settings > Connections > Data Usage
  4. You will see total usage for the current period and a per-app breakdown

Note: Phone-based tracking may not match your network's records exactly. For billing purposes, always refer to your network app.

Set Data Warnings and Limits

You can set up alerts to warn you before you run out of data:

  • Android: Go to Settings > Network > Data Usage and set a data warning threshold (e.g., at 80% of your allowance). You can also set a hard data limit that disables mobile data when reached.
  • iPhone: There is no built-in data limit feature. However, you can reduce usage by turning off mobile data for individual apps in Settings > Mobile Data. Toggle off any apps that do not need mobile data, especially those that consume large amounts in the background.
