What Is an eSIM and How Does It Work?

What Is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM that is built directly into your smartphone, tablet or smartwatch. Unlike a traditional SIM card, which is a small plastic chip you insert into a tray, an eSIM is soldered onto the device's motherboard at the factory. You activate it by downloading a network profile — usually by scanning a QR code or using your carrier's app.

Once activated, an eSIM works exactly like a physical SIM. You get the same calls, texts and data. The only difference is there is no plastic card to lose, damage or swap between devices.

Benefits of eSIM

  • No physical card needed — activate your plan in minutes without waiting for a SIM to arrive in the post.
  • Switch networks easily — download a new eSIM profile without visiting a store or ordering a replacement card.
  • Dual SIM capability — run two numbers on one phone. Keep a personal and business line on the same device.
  • Better for travel — add a local data eSIM when abroad without removing your UK SIM.
  • More secure — an eSIM cannot be physically removed from a stolen phone, making SIM-swap fraud harder.

eSIM for Business

For businesses managing multiple mobile devices, eSIM offers significant advantages:

  • Faster provisioning — new starters can be connected in minutes rather than waiting for SIM cards to be shipped.
  • Remote setup via MDM — IT teams can push eSIM profiles to devices using Mobile Device Management platforms, with no physical handling required.
  • No shipping costs — eliminate the logistics of ordering, storing and distributing SIM cards across offices or remote workers.
  • Easier device rotation — reassign eSIM profiles when employees change handsets or leave the company.
