The UK Phone Number Directory
Every UK area code mapped to its location, every UK telecoms operator that holds number ranges with Ofcom, and live rankings drawn from 66,286 first-party number lookups on this site. This is the directory; for a one-off number check use the free UK Phone Number Checker.
How UK phone numbers work
Every UK number begins with a leading zero followed by a 2–5 digit prefix. The prefix tells you the type of line and, for geographic numbers, roughly where it terminates: 020 for London, 0113 for Leeds, 0207/0203 for sub-ranges within Greater London. Mobile numbers start with 07, freephone numbers with 0800 or 0808, and business rate numbers (the “non-geographic” ranges) with 03, 084, 087, or 09.
Behind each prefix sits a list of communications providers Ofcom has allocated number blocks to. Those allocations are public — we mirror them in our database and link each one to the operator's directory page. So when you look up a single number, you can also follow the chain backwards to see every other range that operator manages.
What makes this directory useful rather than just a list, however, is the second layer: real lookups people on this site have already run. The most-searched and most-reported pages, the per-month trend snapshots, the spam-pattern call-outs on each area-code page — all of that is built from 43,403 distinct numbers our visitors have checked and 53 community comments left behind on individual number pages.
