What Is Airtime Credit?
Airtime credit (ATC) is a cashback payment that businesses receive when they take out mobile phone contracts through an authorised dealer rather than going directly to a network. It is one of the most misunderstood — yet most valuable — benefits of using a business mobile broker.
When you sign a business mobile contract through a provider like Connection Technologies, the network pays us a commission. We pass a portion of that commission back to you as airtime credit. It is real money, paid directly into your business bank account every month.
The term “airtime” originates from the early days of mobile phones when you literally paid for time on the air — the minutes you spent making calls. Today, airtime encompasses all mobile services: calls, texts and data. Airtime credit is essentially a rebate on the airtime charges you are already paying to your network.
How Does Airtime Credit Work?
The process is straightforward:
- You take out a business mobile contract through Connection Technologies rather than going directly to EE, Vodafone, O2 or Three.
- You pay the network their standard rate — the same price you would pay if you went direct. There is no markup.
- The network pays Connection Technologies a commission for bringing them your business.
- We share that commission with you as a monthly airtime credit payment directly into your bank account.
This means you get the same network, the same coverage, the same contract terms — but with money back every month that you would not receive if you went direct.
How Much Airtime Credit Will I Receive?
The amount of airtime credit you receive depends on several factors:
- Network provider — commission rates vary between EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three
- Contract length — longer contracts typically generate higher airtime credit
- Number of handsets — more lines means more credit
- Tariff value — higher-value tariffs generate proportionally more commission
- Handset choice — SIM-only deals often generate different credit levels to handset contracts
As a general guide, businesses with 10 or more mobile contracts can expect to receive meaningful monthly cashback. The exact amount is calculated when we provide your quote, so you know precisely what to expect before signing anything.
When Is Airtime Credit Paid?
Airtime credit is paid on the 23rd of each month, directly into your nominated business bank account. If the 23rd falls on a weekend or bank holiday, payment is made on the next working day.
The payment appears on your bank statement as “CT Airtime ATC”. It typically takes 2-3 months after your contract starts for the first payment to arrive, as networks need time to process the initial commission.
Why Does Airtime Credit Not Appear on My Network Bill?
This is one of the most common questions we receive. Your airtime credit will not appear on your monthly network bill because it is a completely separate financial arrangement.
Here is how the money flows:
- Your network (EE, Vodafone, O2 or Three) bills you their standard rate as normal
- Connection Technologies receives commission from the network separately
- We pay your share of that commission directly to your bank account
Think of it like a cashback credit card — you pay the full price at the shop, but your card provider sends you cashback separately. The shop never shows the cashback on your receipt.
Airtime Credit vs Going Direct to the Network
Many businesses assume they will get a better deal by going directly to EE, Vodafone, O2 or Three. In reality, the opposite is often true.
When you go direct, you pay the standard rate and receive nothing back. When you go through Connection Technologies, you pay the same standard rate but receive monthly cashback, a dedicated UK account manager, multi-network deal comparison and expert contract negotiation on your behalf.
The bottom line: you pay the same amount but receive money back, plus better service and multi-network flexibility.
Is Airtime Credit Taxable?
Airtime credit payments are treated as a trade discount or rebate for accounting purposes. They should be recorded as income in your business accounts and are subject to corporation tax or income tax depending on your business structure. We recommend speaking to your accountant about the correct treatment for your specific situation.
Connection Technologies provides documentation of all airtime credit payments for your records, making it straightforward to account for at year-end.
What Happens to My Airtime Credit When I Renew?
When your contract comes up for renewal, your airtime credit is recalculated based on the new deal. This is actually one of the best times to maximise your cashback — as an existing customer, we can often negotiate improved terms with the networks, which translates to higher airtime credit for you.
We proactively contact all customers before their contracts expire to ensure you get the best possible renewal deal and continued airtime credit payments.
I Have Not Received My Airtime Credit — What Should I Do?
If your airtime credit payment has not arrived, check the following:
- Verify your bank details — ensure the account details we hold are correct and up to date
- Check for the payment reference — look for “CT Airtime ATC” on your bank statement
- Allow for the initial delay — first payments typically take 2-3 months after contract activation
- Contact us directly — call 0333 015 2615 or email us and we will investigate immediately
In most cases, missing payments are caused by incorrect bank details or the initial processing period. We resolve these quickly once notified.
Frequently Asked Questions About Airtime Credit
Can I receive airtime credit on existing contracts?
If you are currently on a direct contract with a network, we can arrange for airtime credit to begin when your contract is next renewed through us. We cannot retrospectively apply credit to existing direct contracts.
Does airtime credit apply to SIM-only deals?
Yes. SIM-only contracts generate airtime credit just like handset contracts. In some cases, SIM-only deals can offer better value because there is no handset cost factored into the tariff.
Is there a minimum number of handsets required?
We work with businesses of all sizes, from sole traders with a single line to enterprises with hundreds of connections. However, the airtime credit amount becomes more significant with larger fleets.
Which networks offer airtime credit?
We work with all four major UK networks — EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three. Airtime credit is available across all of them, though the rates vary.
Can I lose my airtime credit?
Airtime credit continues for the duration of your contract as long as your account remains active and in good standing. If you cancel your contract early, airtime credit payments will cease.
