What the iPhone Duo is, and what it is not
The iPhone Duo is a book-style foldable: a 5.4-inch outer display for normal phone use, opening to a 7.6-inch inner display that Apple describes as 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen. It runs the same A20 Pro chip as the 18 Pro family, has a titanium frame and 3D-printed titanium hinge cover, and measures 5.2 mm open, 11.3 mm closed, at 254 g. Apple announced it on 9 September 2026 alongside the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max; the name is iPhone Duo, and Apple has never used the word “Fold” for it.
It is not related to Google Duo, the video-calling app Google folded into Meet in 2022, which is the most common confusion in search. Nor is it a phone-and-tablet bundle. It is a single device that takes the place of a phone plus, for some users, the iPad they carry alongside it.

Carriers. EE confirmed in its 12 September press release that it will range the Duo with pre-orders from 16 October and availability from 23 October, and that small-business customers can upgrade at any time on selected plans. O2 lists the Duo as “coming soon” with a register-interest option; Vodafone Business has a Duo page in its business pay-monthly range with trade-in of up to £855 on eligible iPhones; Three Business runs a countdown to the 16 October pre-order and sells to businesses by phone rather than online. Sky Mobile ranging is reported but not confirmed. None of the networks had published business tariffs for the Duo on 22 September 2026; we will add them here with retrieval dates when they appear. eSIM-only: what it changes for a fleet
The Duo has no SIM tray. It holds two active eSIMs and stores eight or more, and Apple’s specification is blunt: it is “not compatible with physical SIM cards”. EE says the eSIM-only design was chosen to maximise battery capacity. For a business the practical consequences are:
- Nothing changes about your numbers. Porting a number onto a Duo uses the same PAC process as any other handset; the profile is delivered to the device instead of a card being posted.
- Ask the network two questions before you order. Does it support eSIM Carrier Activation, which lets your MDM install the eSIM during Automated Device Enrolment, and what is its SM-DP+ server address for the MDM profile? All four UK networks support eSIM; automated provisioning is the part to confirm, and carriers ask for advance notice of bulk activation events.
- Loaners and replacements need the carrier. You cannot move a SIM from a broken Duo into a spare handset in the office. The network must re-issue the profile, so agree a same-day process with your account manager before the first device fails.
- Lock the work line. In Apple Business or your MDM, set the
AllowESIMModificationrestriction so users cannot add or remove eSIMs. Pair it with Stolen Device Protection and Find My. - Two lines on one device is easy. A work eSIM and a personal eSIM can be active together, which suits directors who want one handset without giving up a personal number.

Touch ID in the side button and device policy
Unlike every other current iPhone, the Duo authenticates with Touch ID built into the side button rather than Face ID. From a policy point of view nothing changes: MDM passcode requirements, biometric unlock and passkey use are set in exactly the same way, and Apple Pay and app sign-in work through Touch ID. In practice it is an improvement for anyone who wears a mask, visor or safety glasses at work, and for users who unlock the phone while it is flat on a desk. For video calls there are two front-facing cameras: a 12MP Centre Stage camera on the outer display and an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner screen, so a call can continue whichever way the phone is being held.
Durability and battery on the road
Apple rates the Duo at IP68, to 6 metres for 30 minutes, the same as the 18 Pro, with Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display and Ceramic Shield on the back. The frame and the 3D-printed hinge cover are titanium. Battery life depends on which screen is in use: up to 24 hours of typical use with equal time on both displays, up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display and 31 hours on the inner, with a 50% charge in around 20 minutes from a 60W adapter. The cameras are a 48MP main and a 48MP ultra wide, with a 2x optical-quality crop rather than a dedicated telephoto, so the 18 Pro remains the better handset for long-range site photography. A folding device also needs a case designed for it, and we would insure it: leasing with device cover is worth pricing at this value.
Who should get one
The Duo earns its £700 premium over an 18 Pro Max for people who work with two things at once and would otherwise carry an iPad: directors reviewing board packs with a chat window open, consultants and account managers presenting from the device, surveyors and architects marking up drawings once Apple Pencil support arrives, and anyone approving documents on the move. It is the wrong choice for field engineers who need the best camera and a rugged case, for roles where the handset lives in a pocket or holster, and for any fleet where SIM-swapping between devices is part of the support process. For a business buying 5 to 200 handsets, our advice is one or two Duos per team for the people who will use the inner screen daily, with the rest of the fleet on the iPhone 18 Pro or the iPhone 17 family.
Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold8
Against the 18 Pro Max. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is £1,299 at RRP, has a 6.9-inch single display, Face ID, a nano-SIM tray, the 48MP telephoto and the longest single-screen battery rating in the range. Choose it for one-app-at-a-time work and photography; choose the Duo for side-by-side working. Against the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8. Tax and leasing at a £1,999 price point
A Duo bought through the business is treated like any other handset: VAT-registered businesses reclaim the 20% VAT (£333.17 on the base model), limited companies deduct the cost against corporation tax or claim an outright purchase through the Annual Investment Allowance, and a single company phone per employee carries no benefit-in-kind charge. At this price the financing route matters more than usual. Apple offers 30 months at 0% APR to consumers; on a business contract the handset cost is spread across the airtime term; and business mobile phone leasing lets you refresh after two years without owning a depreciating £2,000 asset. Duo if the user works with two apps side by side and would otherwise carry an iPad. 18 Pro Max for single-app work, the better camera, Face ID, a SIM tray and a £700 lower price. Most businesses need Pro Max handsets for the fleet and a Duo or two for reviewers and directors.
All current UK iPhones support two lines. The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max take a nano-SIM plus eSIM or two eSIMs; the iPhone Duo is dual eSIM only. A work and a personal number can therefore share one handset on any of them.
