How to Avoid Roaming Bill Shock

Roaming bill shock — that sinking feeling when you return from holiday to an unexpectedly large phone bill — is entirely preventable. With a few simple precautions before and during your trip, you can stay connected abroad without breaking the bank.

1. Turn Off Data Roaming Before You Travel

The single most effective way to avoid unexpected charges is to disable data roaming in your phone settings before you leave the UK.

  • iPhone: Settings > Mobile Data > Data Roaming > toggle off.
  • Android: Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Network > Data Roaming > toggle off.

With data roaming off, your phone will only use Wi-Fi for internet access. You can still make and receive calls and texts (though these may incur charges).

2. Set a Spend Cap

Most UK networks let you set a monthly spend cap that prevents your bill exceeding a set amount. This is your safety net — even if you accidentally leave data roaming on, the cap will cut off chargeable services before costs spiral.

  • EE: Set via My EE app or call 150.
  • Vodafone: Set via My Vodafone app or call 191.
  • O2: Set via My O2 app — O2 applies a default £40 cap.
  • Three: Set via the My3 app or call 333.

3. Buy a Roaming Bolt-On

If you need data abroad, purchase a roaming add-on from your network before you depart. These offer a fixed allowance of data, calls and texts for a set daily, weekly or monthly fee — far cheaper than standard roaming rates. Check your network's app or website for available travel passes.

4. Use Wi-Fi Wherever Possible

Hotels, cafes, airports and many public spaces offer free Wi-Fi. Connect to Wi-Fi for data-heavy tasks like video calls, streaming, downloading maps and sending photos. When on Wi-Fi, your phone uses no mobile data at all.

5. Enable Wi-Fi Calling

If your network and phone support Wi-Fi calling, enable it before you travel. Wi-Fi calls are treated as UK calls regardless of where you are in the world, meaning you can call UK numbers at no extra cost as long as you are connected to Wi-Fi.

  • iPhone: Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling > toggle on.
  • Android: Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Network > Wi-Fi Calling > toggle on.

6. Download Offline Maps and Content

Before you leave, download maps (Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline areas), entertainment (Netflix, Spotify) and any documents you might need. This dramatically reduces your need for mobile data while abroad.

7. Watch Out for Background Data

Apps running in the background can consume data without you realising. Before travelling, disable background app refresh for non-essential apps and turn off automatic app updates and cloud photo syncing.

8. Consider a Local SIM or eSIM

For longer trips or destinations with expensive roaming, buying a local SIM card or a travel eSIM can be significantly cheaper than using your UK plan abroad. Many travel eSIM providers offer data-only plans that you can activate alongside your existing UK SIM.
