How to Change APN Settings on Android

If your mobile data or MMS has stopped working, changing your APN settings on Android can often fix the problem. This guide covers the steps for Samsung, Google Pixel, and other Android phones running Android 10 and above.

Steps for Samsung Phones

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Connections.
  3. Tap Mobile Networks.
  4. Tap Access Point Names.
  5. You'll see a list of existing APNs. To add a new one, tap the + (Add) button in the top-right corner.
  6. Fill in the APN fields with the values from your network provider (see our guides for EE, Vodafone, O2, Three, or giffgaff).
  7. Tap the three-dot menu (top-right) and select Save.
  8. Tap the radio button next to your new APN to select it as the active one.
  9. Restart your phone to apply the changes.

Steps for Google Pixel & Stock Android

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Network & Internet.
  3. Tap Mobile Network (or SIMs on Android 12+).
  4. Tap Access Point Names.
  5. Tap the + button to add a new APN.
  6. Enter the correct settings for your network provider.
  7. Tap the three-dot menu and select Save.
  8. Select the new APN and restart your phone.

Steps for Other Android Phones (Xiaomi, OnePlus, Huawei, etc.)

The general path is similar across most Android devices:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Look for SIM Cards & Mobile Networks, Wireless & Networks, or Mobile Network.
  3. Tap your SIM card, then tap Access Point Names.
  4. Add or edit the APN with your provider's settings.
  5. Save and restart.

How to Reset APN Settings to Default

If you've made changes and things have got worse, you can reset to your carrier's default APN:

  1. Go to Access Point Names (using the steps above).
  2. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
  3. Select Reset to default.
  4. Restart your phone.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Can't edit APN? Some carriers lock APN settings. Try resetting to default first, or contact your provider.
  • APN greyed out? Turn off Wi-Fi and make sure your SIM is properly inserted.
