Setting Up APN on Your Phone

Setting Up APN on Your Phone

This guide covers everything you need to know about setting up apn for UK mobile users and businesses.

What Are APN Settings?

APN (Access Point Name) settings tell your phone how to connect to your mobile network's data services. Without the correct APN configured, you will not be able to use mobile data, send MMS messages or use tethering — even if your SIM card is active and you have a data allowance.

When Do You Need to Change APN Settings?

  • After inserting a new SIM card (especially on unlocked or SIM-free phones)
  • When mobile data stops working after a software update
  • When switching to a new network or MVNO
  • When MMS messages fail to send or receive
  • When setting up a mobile hotspot for the first time

How to Access APN Settings

Android: Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names

iPhone: Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Network (note: iPhones on major UK networks usually configure APN automatically via carrier profiles)

Tips

  • Restart your phone after changing APN settings to ensure they take effect.
  • If a custom APN does not work, reset to default and try again.
  • Business devices managed via MDM can have APN settings pushed remotely.
