What Is an APN (Access Point Name)?

What Is an APN?

APN stands for Access Point Name. It is a gateway setting on your mobile phone that tells your device how to connect to your network provider's mobile data service. Think of it as an address your phone uses to reach the internet through your carrier's network.

Every mobile network — whether EE, Vodafone, O2, Three, or an MVNO like giffgaff — has its own APN settings. These settings control how your phone accesses mobile data, sends MMS picture messages, and connects to other network services.

Why Does Your APN Matter?

Without the correct APN settings, your phone cannot connect to mobile data, even if you have signal and an active SIM card. The APN tells your device:

  • Which data gateway to use for internet access
  • How to route MMS (picture and multimedia) messages
  • What authentication credentials are needed (username and password, if any)
  • Which proxy server and port to use for MMS

If any of these values are wrong or missing, you may experience issues such as no mobile data, failed picture messages, or slow connectivity.

When Do You Need to Change Your APN Settings?

In most cases, APN settings are configured automatically when you insert a new SIM card. Your phone detects the network and applies the correct settings. However, there are situations where you may need to update them manually:

  1. After a SIM swap — If you've replaced your SIM card (for example, moving from a nano-SIM to an eSIM), the new settings may not apply automatically.
  2. Switching networks — When you move from one provider to another, your old APN settings may still be active.
  3. Mobile data stops working — If your data connection suddenly fails after a software update or phone reset, incorrect APN settings are a common cause.
  4. Using an unlocked phone — Phones purchased SIM-free or unlocked may not have any pre-configured APN settings.
  5. Business device deployment — When rolling out business mobiles across a team, APN settings may need to be configured manually or via MDM (Mobile Device Management).

What Do APN Settings Include?

A typical APN configuration includes the following fields:

  • Name — A label for the APN (e.g., "EE" or "Vodafone UK")
  • APN — The access point address (e.g., everywhere for EE)
  • Username & Password — Authentication credentials (often blank)
  • MMSC — The MMS service centre URL
  • MMS Proxy & Port — Proxy details for picture messaging
  • MCC & MNC — Mobile Country Code and Mobile Network Code identifying your carrier
  • APN Type — Defines which services the APN handles (e.g., default, mms, supl)

How to Check or Update Your APN

The process varies depending on your device. On Android, navigate to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names. On iPhone, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Network.
