3G Switch-Off: What It Means for Your Phone
3G Switch-Off: What It Means for Your Phone
UK mobile networks are shutting down their 3G services to free up radio spectrum for faster 4G and 5G technology. This page explains the 3G switch-off timeline, who is affected and what you need to do to stay connected.
What Is Happening?
All four major UK networks – EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three – are progressively switching off their 3G infrastructure. The freed-up spectrum is being reallocated to 4G and 5G, which deliver faster data speeds and greater network capacity. Once 3G is turned off in your area, any device that relies solely on 3G will lose the ability to make calls and use mobile data.
UK 3G Switch-Off Timeline
| Network | 3G Shutdown Status | Expected Completion |
|---|---|---|
| Vodafone | Switched off in stages | Completing 2025 |
| EE | Shutdown began 2024 | By end of 2025 |
| Three | Shutdown planned | 2025–2026 |
| O2 | Shutdown in progress | Completing 2025 |
Exact dates vary by region. Networks are switching off 3G mast by mast, so some areas lose 3G before others.
Who Is Affected?
- 3G-only phones – older handsets that do not support 4G will lose voice and data service entirely.
- 4G phones without VoLTE – some early 4G handsets cannot make voice calls over 4G (Voice over LTE). These phones currently fall back to 3G for calls. Once 3G is gone, calls will fail even though data still works.
- IoT and M2M devices – security alarms, trackers, vending machines and other connected devices on 3G modules will stop working.
What You Need to Do
- Check your phone supports 4G VoLTE – go to your phone settings and look for a “VoLTE” or “4G calling” toggle. If it is available, make sure it is switched on.
- Test a 4G-only call – with VoLTE enabled, make a call and check the status bar stays on 4G or LTE. If it drops to 3G during the call, your handset may not fully support VoLTE on your network.
- Upgrade if necessary – most smartphones manufactured from 2015 onwards support 4G and VoLTE. If your device is older, it is time to upgrade. Budget 4G handsets start from as little as £50.
Business Impact and Fleet Audits
Businesses with company-issued phones, tablets or IoT devices should audit their entire fleet now. Identify any 3G-only hardware and plan upgrades before the shutdown reaches your area. Key steps include:
- List all mobile devices and SIMs in use across the organisation.
- Check each device for 4G and VoLTE support.
- Budget for replacements where needed and negotiate bulk upgrade deals with your network provider.
