How to Improve Mobile Signal and Reception
How to Improve Mobile Signal and Reception
Poor mobile signal is frustrating, but there are several proven ways to improve mobile signal at home, in the office or on the move. Start with free fixes before investing in hardware, and you may find a simple change makes all the difference.
Free Fixes to Try First
These cost nothing and can be done right now:
- Move to a window or higher floor – walls and floors absorb signal. Standing near a window on an upper floor often gives a noticeable improvement.
- Enable WiFi calling – most modern smartphones can route calls and texts over your broadband connection instead of the mobile network. This is free on all major UK networks. See our WiFi calling guide for setup instructions.
- Update carrier settings – on iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and accept any carrier update prompt. On Android, check Settings > Software Update.
- Toggle airplane mode – switch airplane mode on, wait ten seconds, then switch it off. This forces your phone to reconnect to the strongest available cell tower.
- Remove a thick phone case – bulky cases, especially those with metal plates or magnetic mounts, can weaken signal reception.
Hardware Solutions
If free fixes are not enough, dedicated hardware can dramatically improve indoor coverage.
Signal Boosters and Femtocells
A femtocell is a small device provided by your network that plugs into your broadband router and creates a mini mobile cell signal indoors. Each major network offers one:
| Network | Device Name | Typical Cost |
|---|---|---|
| EE | EE Signal Box | Free on request |
| Vodafone | Vodafone Sure Signal | Free or up to £100 |
| Three | Three Home Signal | Free on request |
These devices typically cover one room or one floor and require a working broadband connection with at least 2 Mbps upload speed.
External Antennas
For very rural locations where indoor signal is virtually non-existent, an external antenna mounted on the outside of your building can capture a weak outdoor signal and feed it to an indoor booster. Professional installation is recommended, and all boosters must be Ofcom-approved.
Network-Level Solutions
- WiFi calling – the simplest network solution. It is free, uses your existing broadband and works on most smartphones. Set up WiFi calling.
- Switch network – coverage varies significantly between EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three. If one network is weak at your location, another may be strong. Use coverage checkers to compare.
Business Signal Solutions
Offices with poor mobile signal lose productivity and miss calls. For business premises, consider a multi-network SIM approach so devices always connect to the strongest available network, or move voice calls to a VoIP system such as Hypercloud Hosted VoIP that runs entirely over broadband.
