Can you get a business mobile if you’re a sole trader, freelancer or startup? Yes — and it’s easier than most people think. You don’t need to be a large company or have years of trading history. Here’s how it works and what to expect.
Who Can Get a Business Mobile Contract?
Business mobile contracts are available to:
- Sole traders — including self-employed individuals
- Partnerships — LLPs and traditional partnerships
- Limited companies — even newly incorporated ones
- Charities and not-for-profits
- Startups — even pre-revenue businesses
You do NOT need to be VAT-registered, although being registered means you can reclaim VAT on your bill.
What Credit Checks Are Involved?
This is where it differs from personal contracts:
For Limited Companies
Networks check your Companies House record — company age, filing history, and any CCJs against the business. Directors’ personal credit is sometimes checked too, but it’s the business entity that matters most.
For Sole Traders
Since you ARE the business, networks will run a personal credit check. However, the threshold is typically lower than consumer phone contracts because business plans generate higher ARPU for the network.
New Businesses / Limited Trading History
If you’re brand new, you may be asked for:
- A small deposit (usually 1-2 months’ charges)
- Proof of address
- Bank statements showing business activity
An independent broker like Connection Technologies can help find networks that are more flexible with newer businesses — we know which providers have the most relaxed onboarding.
Best Plans for Sole Traders & Startups
As a smaller business, you’ll want to keep costs low while still getting proper business benefits:
1. SIM Only (Best Value)
Business SIM-only deals start from around £6/month. Use your existing phone, get a business number, proper billing, and full VAT recovery. No commitment beyond 30 days in many cases.
2. Handset + Plan (If You Need a New Phone)
Spreading the cost of an iPhone or Samsung over a 24-month contract keeps your upfront costs at zero. The full amount — handset and airtime — is tax-deductible.
3. Pay As You Grow
Start with one line and add more as you hire. Business contracts are designed to scale — you’re not locked into a fixed number of lines.
What Documents Do You Need?
| Business Type | Typically Required |
|---|---|
| Sole Trader | Photo ID, proof of address, UTR number (if available) |
| Limited Company | Company number, director details, registered address |
| Partnership | Partner details, proof of partnership, address |
| Startup (<6 months) | Above + possible deposit or bank statement |
