Verified against Ofcom Connected Nations Spring 2026, Opensignal April 2026 reports and current operator tariffs.
Quick answer: Check live O2 service status at status.o2.co.uk for known outages, then run a postcode-level signal check at O2’s coverage checker. If you confirm an outage in your area, the steps below cover what to do (Wi-Fi calling, multi-network failover, and how Ofcom compensation works).
Indicators show the typical O2 network state — for live, real-time status always check status.o2.co.uk.
How to check live O2 service status
O2 official status page
Bookmark status.o2.co.uk. Lists nationwide and regional incidents, planned maintenance and resolution timelines.
Postcode signal checker
The same page has a postcode signal checker — green / amber / red for indoor and outdoor 4G & 5G at your address.
Downdetector
Downdetector aggregates user reports — useful for spotting region-specific issues before O2 confirms.
My O2 app
The native My O2 app pushes a notification when there is an incident affecting your registered location.
Ask a different network’s user
If a colleague on EE / Three / Vodafone at the same site has full signal, you’ve confirmed it’s O2-specific.
What to do during a confirmed O2 outage
Wi-Fi Calling
Calls and SMS route over your Wi-Fi instead of the cellular network. Settings → Phone → Wi-Fi Calling = ON.
Use messaging apps
WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal and Teams all work over Wi-Fi or another network’s data even if O2 voice is down.
Check 4G Calling on iPhone
Settings → Mobile Data → Voice & Data → ensure VoLTE is enabled — voice will route over 4G data even if traditional voice channel is impacted.
Failover SIM
If your business depends on mobile, a backup SIM on a different network is the only true failover. We set this up routinely for clients.
Stop O2 outages from killing your business
We provision multi-network failover SIMs (e.g. primary on O2, backup on EE) so a single network outage never takes you offline.
O2 outage history (last 12 months)

| Jan 2026 | Data degradation in Manchester area | ~3 hrs intermittent | Fully restored within 4 hrs |
| Nov 2025 | SMS delivery delays UK-wide | ~6 hrs | Backlog cleared overnight |
| Aug 2025 | Localised 5G outage in Glasgow | ~2 hrs | Fully restored same evening |

O2 coverage check by postcode
O2’s postcode signal checker shows predicted coverage for indoor and outdoor 4G and 5G. It is a useful starting point — but real-world signal varies with building materials, height and obstructions. For a definitive answer:
- Check the predicted coverage at your postcode.
- Cross-check against Ofcom’s independent coverage checker (uses raw operator data).
- If both agree on full coverage but you experience drop-outs, request a free O2 SIM trial — physical testing beats prediction.

Are you entitled to compensation for an O2 outage?
Under Ofcom’s automatic compensation scheme, mobile customers are not currently entitled to automatic credits for outages (unlike landline and broadband customers). However:
- If an outage breaches the contract’s published SLA (typically only on business plans), you can claim service credits.
- If an outage is extended (typically more than 24 hours) or recurring, contact O2 customer service — discretionary credits are sometimes offered.
- If service is significantly degraded for more than 30 days, you may have the right to exit your contract penalty-free under Ofcom’s General Conditions.
O2 alternatives if outages are persistent
If you find yourself checking O2’s status page more than once a quarter, the issue may be coverage at your specific location — not a wider O2 problem. The fixes:
Add Wi-Fi Calling
Free, takes 60 seconds per phone, fixes most indoor weak-signal complaints.
Wi-Fi Calling fits when…
- Outages are mostly indoors
- You have decent office Wi-Fi
- One or two staff affected
Switch network
If O2 coverage is genuinely poor at your location, swap to EE or Three for stronger local signal.
Switch fits when…
- Coverage is poor at multiple sites
- Wi-Fi calling does not solve it
- You’re nearing contract end
Multi-network fleet
Best resilience. Mix EE + O2 (or EE + Three) so a single-network outage never takes the whole team offline.
Multi-network fits when…
- Mobile is business-critical
- You have 10+ SIMs
- You have field staff in varied locations
