How to Switch Mobile Network and Keep Your Number

How to Switch Mobile Network and Keep Your Number

Switching mobile network in the UK is straightforward thanks to Ofcom regulations. You can move to a new provider and keep your existing phone number in just a few steps. The entire process typically completes within one working day.

The Switching Process in 3 Steps

  1. Get a PAC code from your current network — this keeps your number. Alternatively, request a STAC code if you want to keep your old contract running separately.
  2. Sign up with your new network — choose your new plan and provide your PAC or STAC code during sign-up.
  3. Your number transfers — the switch completes within 1 working day. Your new SIM activates with your existing number.

How to Get a PAC Code

Text PAC to 65075 from your mobile phone. This works on every UK network — Ofcom requires all providers to send your PAC within 1 minute by text message. Your PAC is a 9-character code valid for 30 days.

You can also request a PAC by calling your network, using their app, or logging into your online account. All methods are free and your provider cannot refuse the request.

How to Get a STAC Code

If you want to switch without automatically cancelling your old contract, text STAC to 75075. A STAC code transfers your number but leaves your old contract active — you must cancel it separately. This is useful if you want to use up remaining allowance or wait for your contract end date before cancelling.

What Happens During the Switch

When your new network processes the PAC code, there is a brief switchover period — typically a few hours — where your old SIM stops working and the new SIM activates with your number. During this window you may be unable to make or receive calls and texts, so it is worth letting important contacts know in advance. Most providers schedule the switch for the morning so you are back up and running by lunchtime.

Your Old Contract

Giving a PAC code to your new network triggers automatic cancellation of your old contract. If you are still within your minimum term, your old provider may charge an early termination fee (ETF) covering the remaining months. Check your contract end date before switching to avoid unexpected charges.

If you are on a rolling monthly or SIM-only deal with no minimum term, there will be no early termination fee — your old contract simply ends when the number ports across.
