Business Data Roaming Explained: Costs, Setup & How to Avoid Bill Shock
Last updated: 26th March 2026
Data roaming is one of the most expensive surprises in business mobile management. One employee checking emails on a trip to New York, another streaming a Teams call in Dubai — and suddenly your monthly bill has an extra four figures on it. Since Brexit removed the EU’s “Roam Like at Home” guarantee for UK networks, roaming charges have returned in various forms across EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone. Understanding what roaming costs, how to control it, and which networks offer the best value for international travel is essential for any UK business with mobile workers. This guide breaks it all down.
What Is Data Roaming and How Does It Work?

When you use your mobile phone outside the UK, your device connects to a local network in the country you’re visiting. Your UK network provider has agreements with these local networks to let you make calls, send texts, and use data — but they charge you a premium for the privilege. This is data roaming.
On your phone, roaming is controlled by a simple toggle. When enabled, your device can connect to foreign networks. When disabled, you’ll only be able to connect to Wi-Fi for internet access. The charges are applied by your UK network, not the foreign one — they appear on your regular monthly bill.
UK Roaming Charges After Brexit
Before January 2021, EU regulations meant UK mobile users could use their phones across Europe at no extra cost. Post-Brexit, UK networks were free to reintroduce roaming fees — and most have done so in some form, although the implementation varies significantly between providers.
EE, O2, Three & Vodafone: European Roaming Comparison
| Network | European Roaming Charge | Daily Data Allowance | Fair Usage Cap | Countries Covered |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EE | £2.47/day (Roam Abroad pass) | Uses UK data allowance | 50 GB/month | 47 European destinations |
| O2 | £3.50/day (Europe Zone) | Uses UK data allowance | 25 GB/month | 48 European destinations |
| Three | £2/day (Go Roam Europe) | 12 GB/month roaming data | 12 GB/month | 36 European destinations |
| Vodafone | £2/day (included on some plans) | Uses UK data allowance | 25 GB/month | 53 European destinations |
Key takeaway: Vodafone includes European roaming on many of its newer business plans at no additional daily fee, making it the strongest option for businesses with frequent European travellers. Three is the cheapest daily rate but has a lower data cap and covers fewer countries. EE strikes a middle ground. O2’s daily charge is the highest at £3.50.
Rest-of-World Roaming: Where It Gets Expensive
European roaming is relatively affordable compared to the rest of the world. Once your employees travel to the USA, Middle East, Asia, or Africa, costs escalate dramatically. Here’s how the major UK networks price their world roaming zones:
| Destination Zone | EE | O2 | Three | Vodafone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USA / Canada | £5.57/day pass | £6/day pass | £5/day (Go Roam) | £6.85/day pass |
| Australia / New Zealand | £5.57/day pass | £6/day pass | £5/day (Go Roam) | £6.85/day pass |
| UAE / Middle East | £5.57/day pass | £8/day pass | £5/day (Go Roam) | £6.85/day pass |
| India / Southeast Asia | £5.57/day pass | £8/day pass | £5/day (Go Roam) | £6.85/day pass |
| Africa (selected) | £5.57/day pass | £8/day pass | Not covered (pay per MB) | £6.85/day pass |
| Without a pass (per MB) | Up to £7.20/MB | Up to £6/MB | Up to £5/MB | Up to £8/MB |
The bottom row is the critical one. Without a daily pass, a single megabyte of data outside Europe can cost up to £8. A short Teams video call uses roughly 40 MB per minute. That’s potentially £320 for a single minute of video calling without the right plan. This is how bill shock happens.

How to Enable and Disable Data Roaming

On iPhone (iOS)
- Open Settings
- Tap Mobile Data (or Cellular)
- Tap Mobile Data Options
- Toggle Data Roaming on or off
When roaming is off, your iPhone can still connect to Wi-Fi abroad — you just won’t use mobile data. This is a good default setting; turn roaming on only when you have the right pass or add-on activated.
On Android
- Open Settings
- Tap Connections (or Network & internet depending on the manufacturer)
- Tap mobile networks
- Toggle Data roaming on or off
On Samsung devices, you’ll also find a Roaming data usage warning toggle — enable this to get a pop-up warning whenever roaming data is about to be used.

How to Avoid Bill Shock: 8 Practical Steps
Bill shock from roaming is entirely preventable. Here’s what your business should do:
- Always buy a roaming add-on before travelling: Daily passes cap your spend at a predictable amount. Most can be activated via the network’s app or by texting a code
- Set a data usage alert: On iPhone, reset your data statistics before each trip (Settings > Mobile Data > scroll down > Reset Statistics) and monitor usage. On Android, set a data warning and limit under Settings > Data usage
- Turn off automatic app updates: Go to App Store/Google Play settings and set updates to “Wi-Fi only”. A single app update can consume hundreds of megabytes
- Disable background app refresh for non-essential apps: This stops apps from downloading data in the background while roaming
- Use Wi-Fi whenever available: Hotels, airports, and offices abroad typically offer Wi-Fi. Use it for video calls and large downloads
- Download content before travelling: Pre-download maps (Google Maps offline), Spotify playlists, and important documents before you leave the UK
- Consider a local SIM or eSIM: For extended trips, a local data SIM can be dramatically cheaper. Modern iPhones and many Android phones support eSIMs, meaning you can add a local data plan without removing your UK SIM
- Use an MDM to enforce roaming policies: Microsoft Intune and other MDM platforms can restrict roaming data usage or push roaming settings to devices remotely before employees travel
eSIMs: A Smarter Option for Business Travellers?
eSIM technology is changing the roaming game. Instead of buying a physical SIM card in each country, employees can purchase a data-only eSIM plan from providers like Airalo, Holafly, or Ubigi — often at a fraction of the roaming cost. For example, a 5 GB data eSIM for the USA might cost £10–15, compared to £5.57/day on an EE roaming pass (which would cost £39 for a week-long trip).
Most modern business phones support eSIMs, including iPhone 11 and later, Samsung Galaxy S21 and later, and Google Pixel 4 and later. The eSIM runs alongside the primary UK SIM, so the employee keeps their UK number for calls and texts while using cheaper local data.
What Happens If You Exceed Your Roaming Cap?
All UK networks are required to implement a financial cap for data roaming outside the UK, set at £49.26 (excluding VAT) per billing period. When you hit this cap, data roaming is automatically suspended. This is a legal requirement under Ofcom regulations and applies to all consumer and business contracts.
However, be aware that this cap only applies to data — it doesn’t cover calls or texts. And some networks allow you to opt out of the cap (or increase it) via your account settings, which could expose you to higher charges. For business accounts, ensure your account administrator hasn’t raised or removed this cap.
