How to Cancel Your Mobile Contract

How to Cancel Your Mobile Contract

Whether you are switching to a better deal or simply no longer need your mobile contract, cancelling is straightforward once you know the process. This guide covers everything you need to check before cancelling and how to do it on every major UK network.

Before You Cancel: Three Things to Check

  1. Check your contract end date — log into your network app or call customer services to find out when your minimum term ends. If it has already ended, you are free to leave with just 30 days notice.
  2. Check your notice period — all major UK networks require 30 days notice to cancel. Your service will continue during this period and you will be billed as normal.
  3. Check for early termination fees — if you are still within your minimum term, you will need to pay an ETF. This is usually equal to your remaining monthly payments. See our early termination fees guide for more detail.

Switching and Keeping Your Number

If you are moving to a new network and want to keep your phone number, do not cancel your contract directly. Instead, request a PAC code (Porting Authorisation Code) from your current network. When your new provider processes the PAC, your old contract is automatically cancelled and your number transfers across. See our PAC code guide for step-by-step instructions.

Cancelling Without Keeping Your Number

If you do not need to keep your number, simply call your network and request cancellation. Be aware that once cancelled, your phone number will be recycled by the network after approximately 90 days and cannot be recovered.

What Happens After Cancellation

  • Final bill — your network will issue a final bill covering your last 30 days of service plus any outstanding charges.
  • Device payments — if you have an outstanding handset balance, the remaining amount may become due immediately as a lump sum.
  • Number recycling — if you did not port your number, it will be returned to the network and reassigned after roughly 90 days.

14-Day Cooling Off Period

If you took out a new contract within the last 14 days, you can cancel penalty-free under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. Contact your network as soon as possible to exercise this right. You may need to return any handset you received in its original condition.
