Understanding Mobile Phone Contracts
Understanding Mobile Phone Contracts
Choosing the right mobile phone contract can save you hundreds of pounds over the life of your agreement. Whether you are buying a new handset, looking for a SIM only deal or prefer the flexibility of pay as you go, understanding the different contract types and key terms will help you make a confident decision.
Types of Mobile Contracts
There are three main types of mobile contract available in the UK:
| Contract Type | Typical Length | What You Get | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pay Monthly (Handset + Airtime) | 12–36 months | A phone plus monthly allowance of calls, texts and data | Getting a new phone with manageable monthly payments |
| SIM Only | 1–24 months | Calls, texts and data only — bring your own phone | Keeping your current phone and reducing your monthly bill |
| Pay As You Go (PAYG) | No contract | Top up credit as needed, use for calls, texts and data | Light users, children or anyone who wants no commitment |
Pay monthly contracts split into two parts: the handset cost and the airtime cost. Once you have paid off the handset, you should switch to a cheaper SIM only deal to avoid overpaying.
Key Terms You Need to Know
- Minimum term — the length of time you are committed to the contract. Most pay monthly deals are 24 or 36 months. SIM only contracts can be as short as 30 days.
- Notice period — the amount of advance notice you must give to cancel. This is usually 30 days on all major UK networks.
- Early termination fee (ETF) — the charge you pay if you leave before the minimum term ends. Typically equal to your remaining monthly payments.
- Out-of-bundle charges — costs for usage that exceeds your monthly allowance, such as extra data, international calls or premium numbers.
- Annual price increases — most UK networks increase prices once a year, usually by CPI + 3.9%. This is written into the contract terms, so it does not give you the right to leave penalty-free.
Your Rights Under UK Law
Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, you have a 14-day cooling off period when you take out a new mobile contract online or over the phone. During this window you can cancel without paying an early termination fee. If you bought in store, the cooling off period may not apply, but many networks offer it voluntarily.
Business Mobile Contracts
Business contracts work differently to consumer deals. Terms are often negotiable, and volume discounts are available when you connect multiple lines. Longer contract terms — typically 24 or 36 months — can unlock better per-line pricing. Businesses should also look for dedicated account management, priority support and flexible upgrade options.
