What Is a PAC Code and How to Get One
What Is a PAC Code?
A PAC code (Porting Authorisation Code) is a unique 9-character code that allows you to transfer your mobile phone number from one network to another. When you switch provider using a PAC, your existing number moves with you — so your contacts, bank verifications and everything linked to your number stay working seamlessly.
How to Get Your PAC Code
The quickest method is to text PAC to 65075 from your mobile phone. This works on every UK network. Under Ofcom regulations, your provider must respond with your PAC code within 1 minute.
You can also get your PAC through:
- Phone — call your network's customer service line
- App — most networks let you request a PAC in their mobile app
- Online account — log in to your provider's website and look under account settings or switching options
Whichever method you use, the PAC is free to request.
PAC Code Validity
Your PAC code is valid for 30 days from the date it is issued. If you do not use it within that window, it expires and you will need to request a new one. Requesting a PAC does not commit you to switching — you can simply let it expire if you change your mind.
What Happens When You Use Your PAC
When you give your PAC to your new network, the following happens:
- Your new provider initiates the number port
- Your old contract is automatically cancelled
- Your number transfers to the new network within 1 working day
- There is a brief switchover period (a few hours) where your old SIM deactivates and the new SIM goes live
If you are still within your minimum contract term, your old provider may charge an early termination fee (ETF). This typically covers the remaining monthly payments on your contract.
PAC vs STAC: What Is the Difference?
| Feature | PAC Code | STAC Code |
|---|---|---|
| Text to | 65075 | 75075 |
| Keeps your number | Yes | Yes |
| Cancels old contract | Yes — automatically | No — you cancel separately |
| Use case | Standard switching | Keeping old contract temporarily |
Most people should use a PAC code. A STAC code is only needed if you have a specific reason to keep your old contract running alongside your new one.
Network Retention Offers
When you request a PAC, your current network may contact you with retention deals — discounted plans, extra data or other incentives to stay. You are under no obligation to accept. If you have already decided to switch, simply ignore the offers and proceed with your new provider.
