What Is WiFi Calling and How Does It Work?

What Is WiFi Calling?

WiFi calling is a feature built into most modern smartphones that lets you make and receive phone calls over a WiFi network instead of using the traditional mobile network. When you place a call with WiFi calling enabled, your phone routes the call through your WiFi connection to your network provider's servers, which then connect the call as normal. The person you are calling sees your regular mobile number — they have no way of knowing you are using WiFi rather than a mobile mast.

WiFi calling is particularly useful in locations where mobile signal is weak or non-existent, such as basements, buildings with thick walls, rural areas, and high-rise offices. If you have a broadband connection with decent WiFi coverage, you can make crystal-clear calls from anywhere in the building.

How Does WiFi Calling Work?

When WiFi calling is enabled on your phone, it automatically detects when your mobile signal is poor and switches to routing calls over your WiFi connection instead. The process is seamless — you dial a number or answer a call exactly as you normally would. Your phone creates an encrypted connection to your mobile network provider's infrastructure via the internet, and the call is handled from there.

Key points about how WiFi calling works:

  • Calls use your existing plan minutes, just like normal mobile calls
  • Your mobile number is displayed to the person you call
  • You can receive calls on your mobile number over WiFi
  • HD Voice quality is available when both ends support it
  • SMS and MMS messages can also be sent over WiFi on most networks

Does WiFi Calling Use My Mobile Data?

No. WiFi calling uses your WiFi connection, not your mobile data allowance. It consumes approximately 1 MB of WiFi bandwidth per minute of call time, which is negligible on virtually any broadband connection. Even a basic 10 Mbps broadband line can handle dozens of simultaneous WiFi calls without any noticeable impact.

Benefits of WiFi Calling

  • Works where mobile signal fails — basements, thick-walled buildings, rural locations
  • No extra cost — uses your included plan minutes on all major UK networks
  • No app required — built into your phone's native dialler
  • HD Voice quality — often clearer than standard mobile calls
  • No extra hardware — just your phone and a WiFi connection

Limitations to Be Aware Of

  • Emergency calls (999/112) may not work reliably over WiFi calling on all networks — your phone may need mobile signal for these
  • Handoff between WiFi and mobile network can occasionally drop a call if you leave WiFi range mid-conversation
  • Not all phones support WiFi calling — budget and older handsets may lack the feature
  • You need a stable WiFi connection — very slow or congested WiFi can affect call quality
